Have you ever wondered how investigators can tell where a photo was taken from almost nothing? Well, public images often hide clues in plain sight - a street sign, a mountain ridge, even the angle of a shadow. When you read those details carefully, the world in the frame starts to narrow.

the practice of collecting, processing, and analyzing information from public, accessible sources to answer specific research, security, or investigative questions. it does not involve hacking or breaking into private systems.

Because those clues point in different directions at once, you can cross-check them until only a few places still make sense. Pretty neat.

Or maybe you’ve wondered how a single username can unravel a whole digital trail? When people reuse the same handle or detail online, those fragments can be linked across public platforms like breadcrumbs.

The strongest leads usually sit closest to the original account - a bio line, an old post, a shared nickname - and fade as you move outward. That pattern lets you build a fuller picture without drowning in noise.

Fun fact: people have always gathered intelligence from public sources. “OSINT” is just the name US intelligence later gave that practice, after wartime radio-monitoring shops showed how much of the picture was already sitting in the open.

But of course, public information is messy and rarely tells the whole truth on its own. So we have to gather separate sources and figure out how they fit together without forcing a conclusion too early.

This is called verification but it’s not as simple as it seems and we need a whole bunch of careful checks - timestamps, context, corroboration - before we trust what a single source appears to show.

UofT OSINT is a student-run organization at the University of Toronto. We conduct open-source intelligence work through structured, team-based projects.

Our work centers on large-scale investigations, research, and tooling built from publicly available information. Members contribute to active projects and develop applied OSINT skills through practice, not coursework alone.

None of this turns you into an analyst overnight. It does make the next breathless headline easier to take apart. And if you only use it to win an argument at dinner, that still counts.

An interesting question → a scope → source plan → assigned tasks (TPM + Core Members) → regular check-ins → documentation → verification → and a final write-up, paper, or GitHub repo.

When a project ends, findings get reviewed, documented, archived or published (if appropriate).
